Introduction

Maize (Zea mays L.) is a crucial cereal crop worldwide, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions, valued for its high nutritional content and diverse uses. Drought stress is a major limiting factor for maize growth and yield, impairing key physiological processes such as photosynthesis and cellular division. Effective drought management is essential, as water scarcity directly compromises yield and plant quality. Mycorrhizal fungi form symbiotic associations with plant roots, mitigating the adverse effects of drought by enhancing water and nutrient uptake and improving soil structure. Based on previous findings, plants colonized by mycorrhizal fungi exhibit enhanced drought tolerance and improved physiological performance under water-limited conditions. This study aims to evaluate the effects of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi on maize performance under drought stress, with a focus on enhancing agricultural sustainability in the Jiroft region.

Materials and methods

This study was conducted at the Agricultural and Natural Resources Research and Education Center of South Kerman Province in 2022–2023 to evaluate the effects of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi on hybrid maize (single cross 704) under drought stress. The experiment was conducted as a split-plot arrangement based on a completely randomized block design with three replications. Four levels of drought stress (50%, 70%, 90%, and 100% of the plant’s water requirement) and three seed inoculation treatments—two mycorrhizal fungi species (Glomus fasciculatum and G. mossea) and a non-inoculated control—were evaluated. The response of maize to drought was examined starting from the 8-leaf stage. Various physiological traits, including chlorophyll content and leaf relative water content, were measured. Chlorophyll was assessed using a chlorophyll meter, and leaf relative water content was determined by measuring the fresh and dry weights of leaf samples. Other traits, including proline content, were also measured using standard methods. Data were analyzed using SAS software (version 4.2) to determine correlations and perform mean comparisons.

Results and discussion

In this study, the interaction between drought stress levels and mycorrhizal fungi significantly influenced several agronomic and physiological traits of hybrid maize (single cross 704). The maximum plant height (251.93 cm) was observed under full irrigation combined with G. mossea inoculation. Conversely, the least plant height (205.07 cm) occurred under 50% of the plant’s water requirement without mycorrhizal inoculation, indicating a strong influence of water availability on cell division and plant height. Similarly, cob length was maximized under full irrigation combined with G. mossea, and decreased under reduced water supply, likely due to reduced photosynthesis and nutrient transport. Cob number per plant and grain number per row were also influenced by water stress and mycorrhizal treatments. Full irrigation supplemented with G. fasciculatum resulted in the highest cob count, suggesting enhanced meristematic activity. Grain number per row was maximized under optimal conditions when combined with G. mossea. Irrigation levels exerted a significant effect on seed weight, with the highest values observed under full irrigation and G. mossea inoculation, highlighting the importance of optimal water availability and mycorrhizal symbiosis for seed development. Notably, the yield was highest under optimal irrigation conditions combined with G. mossea, where mycorrhizal symbiosis enhances water and nutrient absorption. Mycorrhizal fungi significantly influenced physiological traits under drought stress. The highest water content and chlorophyll levels were observed under full irrigation and mycorrhizal inoculation, due to enhanced water uptake facilitated by mycorrhizal inoculation. Proline accumulation, a stress indicator, was minimized when drought stress was accompanied by mycorrhizal inoculation, demonstrating the fungi’s role in stress mitigation.

Conclusion

The use of mycorrhizal fungi in this study demonstrated that they can mitigate the negative effects of drought stress and contribute to significant improvements in plant performance, including increased chlorophyll content and reduced proline levels. The results indicated that mycorrhizal inoculation under optimal irrigation conditions enhances grain yield. The high correlation observed among most evaluated traits suggests that improvement in one trait may positively influence other traits, enhancing overall plant performance. This study confirms the importance of using mycorrhizal fungi as an effective strategy to enhance plant tolerance to drought stress and improve agronomic traits, underscoring the need for continued research to develop more effective solutions for sustainable agricultural management.

Introduction
Drought stress has substantially reduced the availability of freshwater resources for agricultural production in many regions worldwide. Consequently, the use of drainage water has been considered a practical strategy for sustaining crop productivity under water‑limited conditions. In addition, soil and irrigation water salinity are among the major factors limiting agricultural yield. Therefore, this study was conducted to evaluate the effects of silicon application on growth, physiological traits, and antioxidant enzyme activity of sugarcane under salinity stress conditions.

Materials and methods
The experiment was conducted over two consecutive growing seasons (2021–2022) in a greenhouse at the Dehkhoda Sugarcane Agriculture and Industry Company. A split–split plot arrangement based on a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications was implemented. Sugarcane variety (CP73‑21 and CP69‑1062) was considered as the sub‑plot factor. Salinity stress was assigned to the main plots at three levels: a control level of 1.4 ± 0.2 dS m⁻¹ (S₀) derived from river water, and two salinity stress levels of 4.1 ± 0.2 dS m⁻¹ (S₁) and 8.2 ± 0.2 dS m⁻¹ (S₂) obtained from drainage water. The timing of silicon application was considered a sub-sub-factor with four levels: Si₀ (no silicon application, control); Si₁ (one month before stress imposition); Si₂ (during salinity stress); and Si₃ (30 days after the onset of salinity stress). In the second year, a split-plot arrangement based on a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications was implemented using the variety CP69‑1062 (which showed greater tolerance to salinity stress than the other variety in the previous experiment). The main factor was irrigation at three salinity levels, consistent with the previous year, while the sub-factor was the timing of silicon application at two levels: no application (control, Si₀) and the optimal timing identified in the first experiment (one month before stress imposition, Si₁).

Results and discussion
Salinity stress significantly reduced the maximum weekly stem growth of both sugarcane varieties by 36 and 68% at salinity levels of 4.1 and 8.2 dS m⁻¹, respectively. Irrigation with salinity levels of 4.1 and 8.2 dS m⁻¹ resulted in significant reductions in stem weight (37 and 66%), leaf relative water content (6.4 and 10.8%), and photosynthetic rate (28 and 42%), while electrolyte leakage increased by 17.2 and 29.4%, respectively, compared with the control treatment. Applying silicon fertilizer one month before stress imposition was the most effective timing, significantly improving most measured traits under mild to moderate salinity levels (1.4 and 4.1 dS m⁻¹). Silicon application significantly increased leaf relative water content of sugarcane compared with the control treatment. The highest leaf-sheath moisture content, showing a 2.5% increase compared with the control treatment, was observed following silicon application one month before stress imposition. Also, the highest leaf relative water content across all salinity levels was achieved when silicon was applied one month before stress. Delaying silicon application diminished its effectiveness in maintaining leaf relative water content, particularly under higher salinity conditions. Under salinity stress, silicon application increased catalase (CAT) activity by 15.2, 56.4, and 88.9% at salinity levels of 1.4 (control), 4.1, and 8.2 dS m⁻¹, respectively, compared with non‑silicon treatments. The activity of ascorbate peroxidase (APX) increased by 99.8% and 115% following silicon application under salinity stress levels of 4.1 and 8.2 dS m⁻¹, respectively, compared with the control treatment. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity decreased by 9.5 and 15.8% under salinity stress at 4.1 and 8.2 dS m⁻¹, respectively, relative to the control. However, silicon application increased the activity of this enzyme by 12% compared with treatments without silicon application.

Conclusion
Based on the results, sugarcane cultivation can be maintained during periods of water scarcity by using drainage water from sugarcane farming, which has an average salinity of approximately 4 dS m⁻¹. This water can be used for irrigation throughout the growing season with no marked adverse effects on growth and physiological performance. Moreover, silicon fertilizer application enhanced antioxidant enzyme activity and contributed to increased sugarcane tolerance to salinity stress

Introduction
Approximately 40% of agricultural land is located in dryland regions, and dryland agriculture plays a key role in providing food worldwide. Enhancing the productivity of dryland agricultural systems is a significant challenge for ensuring food security, particularly in light of reduced rainfall attributed to climate change. Given the rising population and the limitations on expanding arable land, the main way to increase crop productivity is through effective management techniques. Among various strategies to improve plant yield is seed priming, which is a cost-effective, efficient, and practical method that carries minimal risk. Vitaspirin is utilized as a therapeutic agent to alleviate stress in livestock and poultry. This study aimed to explore the impact of seed priming with Vitaspirin and other substances on various aspects of dryland wheat.

Materials and methods
The study was conducted utilizing a randomized complete block design in three cropping seasons: 2017-18, 2018-19, and 2019-20. Wheat seeds were primed in solutions of urea (2%), zinc sulfate (0.6 %), potassium chloride (1%), calcium chloride (1.4 %), vitaspirin (0.1 %) and cytokinin (0.005 %). Seeds soaked in water (hydropriming) and unprimed seed were used as controls. During the seed priming process, 4.5 kg of Azar 2 seeds were aerated for 10 h at 16-18 °C using 22.5 liters of each solution (ratio 1:5). The seeds underwent dried in air prior to their planting in the field.

Results and discussion
In this experiment, seed priming with calcium chloride and urea resulted in the highest grain yield during the 2018–2019 cropping season. Seed priming with calcium chloride during the 2018–2019 cropping season had the maximum chlorophyll and proline concentration in the leaves. Also, the concentration of carbohydrates in leaves was significantly increased by hydropriming, seed priming with Vitaspirin, urea, and calcium chloride. In this study, plant height and stem internodes (extrusion length, peduncle length, penultimate length) were simultaneously increased by seed priming with Vitaspirin, urea, calcium chloride, and hydropriming. Seed priming with calcium chloride and urea in the 2018–2019 cropping season significantly boosted LAImax and CGRmax and decreased the time needed to reach LAImax and CGRmax. In the 2018–2019 cropping season, seed priming with zinc sulfate had the maximum dry matter and RUE. Seed priming with zinc sulfate during the 2018-2019 cropping season emerged as one of the most effective treatments for enhancing grain yield in this study. Seed priming with urea in the 2018–2019 cropping season came in second place in terms of RUE and grain yield. Results showed that urea priming emerged as a superior treatment, enhancing not only grain yield but also yielding a more favorable benefit-to-cost ratio. The easy accessibility and relatively non-toxic nature of urea make it a promising treatment for on-farm adaptation, offering a practical option for farmers.

Conclusion
Primed seeds emerge more quickly and become established in the field. As a result of the 2019–2020 crop season's lower rainfall, seedlings derived from primed seeds experienced subject to reduced available moisture earlier than seedlings derived from non-primed seeds. This led to the death of the seedling, a reduction in the number of tillers and spikes, and finally a drop in grain yield. This showed how important the initial growing conditions were for the effectiveness of priming treatments. In general, in the 2018-2019 cropping season, when the amount of rainfall was higher compared to the other two cropping seasons, the effect of seed priming on improving grain yield was also higher. It can be argued that, under rainfed conditions, seed priming enhances grain yield primarily during growing seasons with higher rainfall. Consequently, the effectiveness of seed priming in boosting grain yield diminishes as rainfall decreases, a finding that warrants further and more rigorous investigation.

Introduction
Changes in the size and growth rate of plant cells and tissues, driven by alterations in the expression of growth-related genes, represent one of the primary adaptive responses of plants to environmental stresses. Among these genes, TaEXPB23, a member of the expansin family, plays a key role in cell wall loosening and cell expansion, thereby promoting coleoptile elongation and early seedling growth. A longer coleoptile facilitates deeper sowing, improves seedling emergence, and enhances plant establishment under water-limited conditions, making it an important trait for drought adaptation. Although the biological function of TaEXPB23 has been reported, its association with drought tolerance and related agronomic traits in wheat, particularly in Iranian cultivars, remains poorly understood. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the expression pattern of the TaEXPB23 gene in different wheat genotypes and to evaluate its relationship with coleoptile length, kernel weight, plant height, and drought tolerance, providing insights into its potential application in wheat breeding programs.

Materials and methods
The expression pattern of the TaEXPB23 gene was investigated in eight bread wheat cultivars, including Arta, Uroum, Baharan, Weebill 264, Chamran, Roshan, Hirmand, and Darya. These genotypes were selected based on their contrasting responses to drought stress, coleoptile length, and grain yield. Field experiments were conducted at the Lorestan Agricultural Research Station using a randomized complete block design with three replications under two irrigation regimes: well-watered (control) and terminal drought stress. In the drought treatment, irrigation was applied only at seedling emergence, whereas the control plots received normal irrigation throughout the growing season. Grain yield, plant height, thousand-kernel weight, coleoptile length, and coleoptile dry weight were measured. The Stress Tolerance Index (STI) was calculated to evaluate genotype responses to drought stress. For gene expression analysis, seeds were germinated under laboratory conditions, and coleoptile samples were collected at 6, 24, 48, and 72 h after germination. Total RNA was extracted using a standard protocol, and its quantity and quality were assessed by spectrophotometry and agarose gel electrophoresis, respectively. First-strand cDNA was synthesized and used for quantitative real-time PCR (RT-qPCR) with SYBR Green chemistry on a Bio-Rad iQ5 system. The 18S rRNA gene served as the internal reference. All reactions were performed in three technical replicates. Relative gene expression was quantified using the Pfaffl method and analyzed with the REST software.

Results and discussion
The highest average coleoptile length belonged to genotypes Roshan, Baharan, Hirmand, Oroum and Darya and the lowest to Weebille264, Chamran and Arta. The 1000 kernel weight of the eight studied genotypes was between 35.1 to 44.0 grams and the range of changes in their plant height in non-stressed conditions was between 87.8 and 110.7 cm. The expression profile of the TaEXPB23 gene differed among the wheat cultivars at 6, 24, 48, and 72 h after germination. Relative gene expression increased in almost all genotypes up to 48 hours after germination, and the closer the seedling is to the end of its coleoptile growth period (72 hours), the gene expression decreased. The existence of a negative correlation between coleoptile growth and gene expression at 6 hours and turning it into a positive correlation at 72 hours, shows that although in the early hours after germination, the increase in the expression of the TaEXPB23 caused a decrease in coleoptile growth, but with the passage of time, the changes in gene expression caused an increase in the length and dry weight of coleoptiles of wheat genotypes

Conclusion
Based on the correlation coefficients of gene expression with morphological traits, seed yield and tolerance indices, it can be stated that early growth and better seedling establishment as a result of higher expression of the TaEXPB23 has led to increased growth and production in mature plants, especially under drought stress.

Introduction
Medicinal plants are valuable sources of bioactive compounds with therapeutic properties and play an important role in the pharmaceutical and medical industries. Catharanthus roseus L., commonly known as periwinkle, is a well‑known medicinal plant native to Madagascar and widely distributed in tropical regions. This species is particularly valued for producing important alkaloids such as vincristine and vinblastine, which are widely used in the treatment of cancers including leukemia and lymphoma. In addition, C. roseus contains phenolic and antioxidant compounds that contribute to its tolerance to environmental stresses. Drought stress is a major constraint in agriculture, particularly in arid and semi arid regions, and can lead to reduced growth and various physiological and biochemical changes in periwinkle plants. Under such conditions, the application of the amino acid tryptophan may enhance plant tolerance and mitigate the adverse effects of drought stress. Tryptophan acts as a precursor in the biosynthesis of plant hormones such as auxin and plays an important role in regulating plant growth and responses to environmental stresses. Considering the importance of C. roseus in the pharmaceutical industry and the negative effects of drought stress on its growth and performance, this study aimd to evaluate the effects of different levels of tryptophan and drought stress on selected physiological and biochemical traits of this plant. The findings of this study may provide useful strategies for improving the growth and performance of periwinkle under drought stress conditions.

Materials and methods
The experiment was conducted in 2023 at the University of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources of Khuzestan, Iran. The experiment was arranged as a factorial based on a completely randomized design with three replications. The experimental factors included different concentrations of tryptophan (0, 50, 100, 150, 200, and 250 mg L⁻¹) and three levels of drought stress (control, mild, and severe). Tryptophan was applied at two growth stages: the eight‑leaf stage and the beginning of flowering.

Results and discussion
Mean comparison showed that increasing tryptophan concentration up to 250 mg L⁻¹ significantly enhanced plant dry weight, relative leaf water content, membrane stability, and catalase and peroxidase activities under severe drought stress (p ≤ 0.01). In addition, antioxidant capacity and total protein content significantly increased (p ≤ 0.05). The results also showed that all measured traits, except membrane stability, improved at tryptophan concentrations of 200 and 250 mg L⁻¹. In contrast, severe drought stress significantly reduced plant dry weight, total protein content, membrane stability, and leaf relative water content compared with the control treatment.

Conclusion
The application of tryptophan at appropriate concentrations (200 and 250 mg L⁻¹) may alleviate the adverse effects of drought stress and enhance the growth and performance of the medicinal plant C. roseus. These findings highlight the potential of growth‑promoting compounds such as tryptophan to improve plant performance under environmental stress conditions.

Introduction
Plant growth is one of the most complex and environmentally sensitive physiological processes in plants. (Al-Khayri et al., 2023). Heavy metals are among the major limiting factors for crop cultivation in many regions worldwide, particularly in arid and semi‑arid areas such as Iran (Saini and Dhania, 2020). Cadmium (Cd) is a non-essential and highly toxic environmental pollutant that causes serious environmental and agricultural problems. High doses of cadmium are carcinogenic to humans. (Bakhtiari et al., 2023). Biochar is widely used as a soil conditioner because it improves soil physicochemical properties and nutrient availability (Muhammad et al., 2020). Salvia officinalis L., a perennial herbaceous species in the Lamiaceae family, is well known for its valuable essential oil. Accordingly, this study was conducted to evaluate the effects of biochar on selected growth traits, essential oil content, and nutrient uptake in Salvia officinalis L. under cadmium stress.

Materials and methods
The experiment was conducted as a factorial study in a completely randomized design with four replications in the research greenhouse of the Department of Horticultural Sciences and Landscape Architecture, Faculty of Agriculture, Ferdowsi University of Mashhad. The treatments consisted of three levels of biochar (0, 1, and 2% w/w) derived from acacia wood and three levels of cadmium stress (0, 30, and 60 mg kg⁻¹ soil). Plants were harvested at the flowering stage, and several traits were measured. The studied traits included growth characteristics, essential oil content, and nutrient elements including N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn, Cu, B, and Cd.

Results and discussion
The results indicated that increasing cadmium stress significantly decreased plant height, stem diameter, the number of sub-branches and leaves, fresh and dry weights of aerial parts, and root length and volume. Cadmium stress also significantly reduced essential oil content. The interaction between biochar application and cadmium levels showed that applying 2% w/w biochar increased plant height, leaf area, fresh and dry weights of aerial parts, and root length under different cadmium levels. The highest plant height (22 cm), leaf area (709.84 cm²), fresh (36.63 g per plant) and dry (20.44 g per plant) weights of aerial parts, root length (30.75 cm), and essential oil content (0.8% v/w) were observed in plants treated with 2% (w/w) biochar in the absence of cadmium. Essential oil content increased in response to biochar application. Essential oil content was approximately 12.33% higher in plants treated with 2% (w/w) biochar than in untreated plants. Biochar application improved growth traits and increased nutrient concentrations, with the maximum increases observed in plants treated with 2% (w/w) biochar.

Conclusion
Cadmium, as a toxic heavy metal, negatively affects plant growth. The results indicate that higher cadmium levels caused severe damage to plant growth, essential oil content, and nutrient uptake. The greatest cadmium‑induced damage was observed at a soil concentration of 60 mg kg⁻¹. Biochar application also improved growth traits, essential oil content, and nutrient uptake, with the greatest improvements observed in plants treated with 2% (w/w) biochar. The greatest improvements in morphological traits, essential oil content, and nutrient concentrations were observed in plants treated with 2% (w/w) biochar under severe cadmium stress. Biochar application reduced the harmful effects of cadmium by decreasing its translocation from roots to aerial parts and enhancing nutrient absorption.

Introduction
Water deficit stress is one of the most important factors that reduce crop yields. Under drought stress conditions, various molecular, biochemical, physiological, morphological, and quality-related processes are disrupted (Narimani et al., 2019). Supplementary irrigation is a crucial strategy for mitigating the negative impacts of drought stress in crops. Early implementation of supplementary irrigation during dry years or at critical growth stages can help stabilize crop yields (Alkatb, 2022). Considering the role of wheat as a major source of calories and protein for the Iranian population, the relatively low yield of wheat in rainfed farming systems, and the large proportion of wheat cultivation under rainfed conditions in Iran, it is necessary to investigate strategies for increasing wheat productivity per unit area. The use of plant growth regulators can mitigate the adverse effects of abiotic stresses on agricultural production in arid and semi-arid regions (Nezamdoost et al., 2023). Selenium is a non-essential element for most plants but an essential micronutrient for animals and humans (Lanza et al., 2021). Ascorbic acid is a natural antioxidant and plant growth regulator that can enhance grain yield, yield components, and water use efficiency in wheat (Amin et al., 2008). Methanol is considered a readily absorbed carbon source for plants, and its application can enhance the growth and yield of C3 species (Huve et al., 2007). Therefore, this study was conducted to evaluate the effects of supplementary irrigation and selected growth regulators, including selenium, ascorbic acid, and methanol, on wheat growth and yield

Materials and methods
To investigate the effects of three irrigation regimes (supplementary irrigation at the flowering stage, supplementary irrigation at the grain filling stage, and rainfed conditions) and four plant growth regulator treatments (foliar application of selenium, ascorbic acid, methanol, and water as the control) on the quantitative and qualitative characteristics of wheat, a split plot experiment based on a randomized complete block design with three replications was conducted during 2023–2024 at the Research Farm of the Faculty of Agriculture, Lorestan University. Foliar application of the growth regulators was performed at the 4–6 leaf and stem elongation stages.

Results and discussion
The results indicated that drought stress reduced grain yield, morphological traits, chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, total chlorophyll, carotenoids, grain-filling rate, and grain-filling period, whereas foliar application of plant growth regulators enhanced these traits. The maximum levels of chlorophyll a (8.8 mg g⁻¹ FW), total chlorophyll (11.13 mg g⁻¹ FW), and carotenoids (4.45 mg g⁻¹ FW) were observed with the application of ascorbic acid, selenium, and selenium or ascorbic acid, respectively, under supplementary irrigation at the flowering stage. Methanol application under non-irrigated conditions resulted in the highest grain filling rate (2.66 g day⁻¹), whereas foliar application of ascorbic acid under irrigation at the grain filling stage resulted in the longest grain filling period (44.02 days) and an effective grain filling period (36.43 days). Supplementary irrigation at the grain filling stage and ascorbic acid application produced the highest grain yields (1920.58 and 1882.78 kg ha⁻¹, respectively). Grain yield increased by 5.9% and 12.6% under supplementary irrigation at the flowering and grain filling stages, respectively, compared with non-irrigated conditions. Likewise, foliar application of selenium, ascorbic acid, and methanol increased grain yield by 1.1%, 8.3%, and 7.1%, respectively, compared with the control.

Conclusion
Foliar application of plant growth regulators combined with supplementary irrigation may mitigate the adverse effects of water deficit stress by improving photosynthetic pigments and grain filling traits. Therefore, the combined use of these growth regulators and supplementary irrigation can improve wheat growth and yield under rainfed conditions.

Introduction
Salinity stress significantly impairs plant growth and yield and represents a major challenge to sustainable agriculture. Camelina (Camelina sativa), an oilseed crop, is well known for its resilience to adverse environmental conditions, including salinity. Brassinosteroids, as plant growth regulators, have shown potential to mitigate salinity-induced stress. This study evaluated the effects of foliar brassinosteroid application on morphological traits, seed yield, and growth indices of camelina under salinity stress, with the aim of identifying effective strategies to improve crop performance in saline environments.

Materials and methods
A field experiment was conducted over two cropping seasons (2021–2022 and 2022–2023) in Yazd, Iran, using a split-plot arrangement in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. Salinity levels (0, 4, 8, and 12 dS m⁻¹) were assigned to main plots, and foliar application of 24-epibrassinolide (0, 1, 2, and 3 μM) was assigned to subplots. Morphological traits (plant height, number of lateral branches, number of siliques per plant, and seeds per silique), yield components (thousand-seed weight and seed yield), and growth indices (biological yield and harvest index) were measured. Data were analyzed in SAS 9.1 using a mixed model, with year considered a random effect. Normality was assessed using the Kolmogorov–Smirnov test, and homogeneity of variance was evaluated using Bartlett’s test (χ² = 3.45, P = 0.32). A combined two‑year analysis was conducted, and treatment means were compared using the LSD test at the 5% significance level.

Results and discussion
The salinity × brassinosteroid interaction significantly affected all measured traits (P < 0.01). Salinity at 12 dS m⁻¹ reduced seed yield by 44% compared with untreated plants (0 μM) at 0 dS m⁻¹, whereas 3 μM brassinosteroid increased seed yield by 59%, 59%, 55%, and 76% at salinity levels of 0, 4, 8, and 12 dS m⁻¹, respectively, relative to untreated plants (0 μM) at the same salinity level (LSD = 85.3 kg ha ⁻¹). Plant height increased by 95%, 33%, 51%, and 50% at the respective salinity levels with 3 μM brassinosteroid, compared with untreated plants (LSD = 2.03 cm). The number of lateral branches increased by 161%, 23%, 97%, and 193% at salinity levels of 0, 4, 8, and 12 dS m-1, respectively, with 3 μM brassinosteroid (LSD=1.16); however, the difference between 2 and 3 μM at 12 dS m⁻¹ was not significant (difference = 1.05 < LSD = 1.16). Leaf area index was not significantly affected by brassinosteroid treatments at any salinity level. (LSD = 0.12). The number of siliques per plant increased significantly, reaching up to 39% at 8 dS/m. Biological yield and harvest index at 12 dS m⁻¹ increased by 50% and 18%, respectively, relative to untreated plants (0 μM) (LSD = 150.2 kg ha⁻¹ and 1.45%). These findings are consistent with previous studies, suggesting that brassinosteroids can mitigate salinity stress by enhancing growth and reproductive traits (Sharma et al., 2022b; Khalid et al., 2020; Kaya et al., 2025).

Conclusion
Overall, salinity stress adversely affected camelina growth and yield; however, foliar application of 3 μM brassinosteroid effectively mitigated these effects and significantly improved morphological traits, seed yield, and growth indices. This treatment offers a promising strategy to improve camelina performance in saline environments and support sustainable agriculture in salt‑affected regions.

Introduction
Salinity stress is a major limiting factor for plant growth. Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is known as an important signaling molecule in response to environmental stresses. This study investigated the effect of exogenous GABA application on the morphophysiological and biochemical characteristics of rosemary plants under saline conditions.

Materials and methods
A factorial experiment was conducted using a completely randomized design (CRD) with three replications. The study investigated the effects of NaCl salinity (0, 50, 100, and 150 mM) and foliar-applied GABA (0, 20, 40, and 60 mM) on the morphophysiological traits of rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis L.) during the summer of 2014 at the research greenhouse of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Zanjan. Fifteen-to-twenty cm tall rosemary seedlings, sourced from Zarrin Gyaa Urmia Company, were cultivated in size 3 pots containing equal proportions of perlite, cocopeat, and washed soil. Prior to treatment application, plants were acclimatized for two weeks with Hoagland nutrient solution. Greenhouse environmental conditions were set to a 16 h light/8 h dark cycle, with day/night temperatures of 25/20 °C. Salinity was applied gradually over several stages. Salinity stress was imposed by adding NaCl to the irrigation water, and the pots were irrigated every three days. Foliar spray solutions were prepared by dissolving the required amount of GABA in distilled water. The first foliar spray was applied immediately after the initiation of salinity stress, the second two weeks later, and a third application was performed thereafter, for a total of three applications. Twenty ml of solution was applied to each pot (Vojodi Mehrabani et al., 2016). The entire experiment lasted for 14 weeks. The dry weight of the aerial parts was measured after determining the fresh weight using a digital scale and the stem length with a ruler. Leaf proline content, leaf area, and leaf relative water content were measured. Data were analyzed using SAS software, and graphs were generated using Microsoft Excel. Duncan’s multiple range test was used to compare means at the 5% probability level.

Results and discussion
Mean comparison results for shoot fresh weight (Table 2) indicated that the interaction between salinity and GABA was significant at the 1% level. The highest shoot fresh weight (25.130 g) was recorded under non‑saline conditions with the application of 40 mM GABA. The lowest shoot dry weight (4.941 g) was related to the independent effect of 150 mM salinity treatment, whereas the highest shoot dry weight (7.745 g) was observed in the salinity control treatment with 20 mM GABA. The interaction effect of salinity stress and GABA treatment on stem length was significant at the 1% level. The highest stem length (25.934 cm) was recorded under non‑saline (control) with 60 mM GABA. The interaction effect of salinity and GABA on rosemary leaf area was significant at the 1% level. The highest leaf area (4.5657 cm²) was observed under non‑saline (control) conditions with 60 mM GABA. In contrast, the lowest leaf area (2.1772 cm²) was recorded in the absence of GABA under 150 mM salinity. The interaction effect of salinity stress and GABA on electrolyte leakage percentage was statistically significant at the 1% level. The highest electrolyte leakage (98.031%) was observed at 150 mM salinity with 60 mM GABA, whereas the lowest value (67.231%) was recorded under non‑saline (control) conditions with 60 mM GABA. The main effect of salinity and GABA on leaf proline content was significant at the 1% level. Under salinity treatments, the highest proline content (0.0352 μmol g⁻¹ leaf fresh weight) was observed at 100 mM salinity, whereas the lowest value (0.0142 μmol g⁻¹ leaf fresh weight) was recorded in the control treatment. Similarly, among the GABA treatments, the highest proline content (0.0218 μmol g⁻¹ leaf fresh weight) was recorded at 60 mM GABA

Conclusion
The present study demonstrated that salinity stress significantly affects the growth and physiological characteristics of the medicinal plant rosemary, resulting in reduced growth‑related traits and increased stress‑related indicators, such as electrolyte leakage and proline content. The application of GABA as a regulatory compound partially mitigated the detrimental effects of salinity. These results suggest that foliar application of GABA may represent an effective strategy to enhance rosemary tolerance to saline conditions and improve the performance of medicinal plants under environmental stresses.

Introduction
Sugarcane is a major crop grown in tropical and subtropical regions and is used for the production of sugar, renewable products, biomaterials, and ethanol. The timing of the final nitrogen application and irrigation cut-off during the ripening stage of sugarcane is critical for improving juice quality in terms of Brix, sucrose, reducing sugars, and purity. Proper water and nitrogen management is essential for achieving optimal outcomes.

Materials and methods
To evaluate the effects of final nitrogen application timing and irrigation cut-off on the quantitative and qualitative yield of the sugarcane variety IRC99-02, a field experiment was conducted during the 2023–2024 growing season at the Dabal Khazaei Sugarcane Agro-Industry Company using a split-plot arrangement based on a randomized complete block design with three replications. The main plots comprised four irrigation cut-off timings: September 20, October 1, October 11, and October 21. The subplots consisted of three final nitrogen application timings: June 19, July 5, and July 20. The experiment was conducted on ratoon crops of the sugarcane variety IRC99-02.

Results and discussion
The results showed that cane height, number of millable canes, single-cane weight, internode length, cane specific weight, and cane and sugar yield were affected by the experimental treatments. Cane height increased significantly under irrigation cut-off timings of October 1, October 11, and October 21 by 8%, 12%, and 15%, respectively, compared with the September 20 irrigation cut-off. In addition, final nitrogen application on July 5 and July 20 increased cane height by 2% and 8%, respectively, compared with June 19. The greatest cane height (288 cm) was observed under the October 21 irrigation cut‑off combined with the July 20 final nitrogen application. The number of millable canes was 130,250 under the June 19 nitrogen application, while nitrogen application on July 5 and July 20 increased the number of millable canes by 4% and 10%, respectively, compared with the June 19 treatment. The irrigation cut-off treatment on October 21 showed the highest single-cane weight (771 g). Single-cane weight was 691 g under the final nitrogen application on June 19. Nitrogen application on July 20 resulted in the highest average single-cane weight (775 g). Internode length was greatest under the July 20 final nitrogen application and the irrigation cut-off timings of October 1, October 11, and October 21, with values of 17.2, 16.8, and 17.2 cm, respectively. Cane yield increased significantly under irrigation cut-off timings of October 1, October 11, and October 21 by 5%, 8%, and 17%, respectively, compared with the September 20 irrigation cut-off. Significant differences in cane yield were observed among irrigation cut-off timings. The lowest cane yield (89.5 t ha⁻¹) was recorded under the June 19 nitrogen application treatment. Cane yield increased significantly with nitrogen application on July 5 and July 20 by 13% and 20%, respectively, compared with the June 19 application. The lowest sugar yield (9,349 kg ha⁻¹) was recorded under the September 20 irrigation cut-off treatment. In contrast, sugar yield under irrigation cut-off on October 1, October 11, and October 21 was 10,163, 10,736, and 10,755 kg ha⁻¹, respectively. The results indicated that sugarcane juice quality traits changed over time, with a significant increase in sucrose content. The results for quality traits at harvest (February) showed that the October 11 irrigation cut-off treatment had the highest recoverable sugar percentage (10.8%). The highest recoverable sugar percentage (10.75%) was observed under the July 5 nitrogen application treatment. Moreover, the highest recoverable sugar percentage was observed in the combinations of irrigation cut-off on October 1 with nitrogen application on July 5 (11.3%) and irrigation cut-off on October 11 with nitrogen application on July 5 (11.3%).

Conclusion
These results indicate that both early (September 20) and late (October 21) irrigation cut-off had negative effects on the recoverable sugar percentage of sugarcane juice. In addition, both early (June 19) and late (July 20) nitrogen application resulted in lower recoverable sugar than the July 5 nitrogen application treatment.

Acknowledgements
The authors gratefully acknowledge the financial support provided by Shahid Chamran University of Ahvaz.

Introduction
Dracocephalum kotschyi Boiss., a member of the Lamiaceae family, is a native species found in central and western Iran and is known locally as Badrandjboie-Dennaie or Zarrin-Giah. It is used in traditional folk medicine, and its aerial parts are rich in essential oils. Recent studies have documented several medicinal properties of D. kotschyi, including immunomodulatory, antihyperlipidemic, antinociceptive, and cytotoxic activities (Fallah et al., 2020). Drought stress is the most common abiotic stress affecting plant growth and development (Jaleel, 2009). Some eco-friendly agricultural practices can reduce the harmful effects of drought stress and improve plant growth and production under water-limited conditions. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) can establish symbiotic associations with the roots of the majority of terrestrial plants. AMF promote host plant growth and enhance resistance to drought stress. Moreover, AMF protect host plants against the inhibitory and destructive effects of drought through several mechanisms, including increased water uptake by extraradical hyphae, improved nutritional status, and osmotic adjustment (Ahanger et al., 2014). The main objective of this study was to evaluate the growth and biomass production of D. kotschyi inoculated with mycorrhizal fungi under deficit irrigation.

Materials and methods
This study aimed to evaluate the effects of biochar application (5% w/w of soil) and mycorrhizal inoculation (Funneliformis mosseae) on the growth and biomass production of D. kotschyi Boiss. under water‑deficit conditions in a pot experiment. Irrigation levels included 100, 70, and 40% of field capacity, representing normal irrigation, mild stress, and severe stress, respectively. The experiment was conducted as a factorial arrangement in a completely randomized design (CRD) with three replications under greenhouse conditions at Shahid Bahonar University of Kerman, Kerman, Iran. At the end of the experiment, all plants from each pot were harvested. Different growth parameters and root and shoot characteristics, including root volume, root dry weight, plant height, shoot fresh and dry weight, relative water content, electrolyte leakage, biomass production, and water use efficiency, were examined.

Results and discussion
The results showed that increasing water-deficit levels reduced biomass production by increasing specific leaf weight and decreasing plant height, leaf number, leaf area, root length, and root weight. However, water-use efficiency (WUE) under mild stress did not differ significantly from that under normal conditions, whereas severe drought stress significantly reduced WUE. Biochar application increased WUE by enhancing growth rate, leaf number, root length, root weight, and root volume. Mycorrhizal inoculation also improved growth rate, leaf number and area, root volume and weight, chlorophyll index, biomass production, and WUE. Mycorrhizal inoculation efficiency decreased under drought stress but increased with biochar application. Despite the significant reduction in biomass production under drought stress, D. kotschyi appears to employ stress‑avoidance mechanisms. The results indicate that reductions in leaf area, leaf size, and leaf area ratio, together with an increase in specific leaf weight under severe stress, may represent responses that help maintain relative leaf water content under stress conditions. The findings also indicated that although no interaction effect was observed between biochar or mycorrhizal treatments and irrigation levels, biochar application and mycorrhizal inoculation had significant effects on most of the studied traits.

Conclusion
In semi-arid areas, mycorrhizal inoculation and biochar application can be considered as strategies to increase productivity per unit area. Also, under limited irrigation conditions, the favorable response of plants to mild deficit irrigation suggests that applying mild water stress may serve as an effective agricultural strategy to improve the production of D. kotschyi and other medicinal plants in semi-arid regions.
