Introduction
Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa) is a functional grain with high nutritional value that is tolerant to salt and drought stress. Drought, a notable environmental stress, poses a challenge to plant growth and development. Since most of Iran is considered to be arid and semi-arid regions from a climatic perspective, drought is one of the most significant abiotic stresses in this region. Therefore, cultivating drought-resistant plants, such as quinoa, is a solution to prevent a decrease in crop yield.

Materials and methods
To investigate the effect of drought stress on quinoa cultivars, the experiment was conducted as a split-plot design based on a randomized complete block with three replications in 2023. The experiment was carried out in Zarand, Iran. The levels of drought stress treatment, which served as the main factor, included the following: 1. Full irrigation, providing 100% of the plant's water requirement (control), 2. Irrigation deficiency at 50% of the plant's water requirement (moderate drought stress), 3. Irrigation deficiency at 25% of the plant's water requirement (severe drought stress). Subplots consisted of three quinoa cultivars, including Rahmat, Sadouq, Titicaca, and one Line (Red Seed Line). The drought stress treatments were calculated using evaporation and transpiration data based on the crop coefficient. Seed cultivation was performed manually on August 15. The studied traits at the end of the growing season included: plant height, panicle weight, panicle length, panicle width, number of seeds per panicle, seed weight per panicle, 1000-seed weight, stem diameter at the base of the panicle, seed saponin content, and seed size. One square meter was taken from each plot to measure biomass and seed yield.

Results and discussion
The analysis of variance results indicated that drought stress significantly affected several factors, including the percentage of large and small seeds, 1000-seed weight, panicle weight, diameter of the bottom part of the stem, biomass, plant height, panicle length, and grain yield, all at the 1% significance level. The impact of drought stress on stem diameter at the base of the panicle was significant at the 5% level. The differences among cultivars in all measured traits were significant at the 5% level. The interaction effect of drought stress and cultivar on the percentage of large, medium, and small seeds, as well as the weight and number of seeds per panicle, was significant at the 1% level of significance. Biomass was reduced by 31% and 51% under 50% and 25% of the plant's water requirement, respectively, while seed yield decreased by 35% and 58%, respectively. Rahmat cultivar had the highest seed yield under severe drought stress, producing 275 g m-2. Under moderate and control conditions, Sadouq yielded 641 and 391 g m-2, respectively. The yield reduction rate under severe stress conditions for Rahmat and Red Seed Lines was lower compared to the other two cultivars. Drought stress significantly influenced seed size, as increased stress resulted in smaller seeds. In addition, cultivars with smaller seeds were more significantly affected by intense stress. The correlation analysis revealed that traits significantly influencing seed yield, including panicle weight, 1000-seed weight, biomass, and large seed size, were strongly and positively correlated with seed yield at the 1% level of significance. In contrast, the percentage of small seeds showed a significant negative correlation with yield. The saponin content showed no significant correlation with any of the measured traits. Principal components analysis (PCA) also revealed that biomass, panicle weight, diameter of the upper part of the stem, 1000-seed weight, panicle length, and large seed size had the most significant positive effects on grain yield.

Conclusion
Based on our findings, for selecting lines under drought stress conditions, it is recommended to assess grain size and yield at a moderate stress level of 50% of the plant's water requirement.
</Abstract>

Introduction
Phosphorus (P) is an essential and non-renewable nutrient critical for crop productivity worldwide. Phosphorus deficiency is a major abiotic constraint that substantially limits crop yield. Because phosphorus is inherently immobile in soil, identifying novel genotypes with efficient phosphorus uptake and utilization under low-phosphorus conditions is essential. Maize is a major cereal crop cultivated worldwide; therefore, improving its phosphorus-use efficiency is crucial for optimizing maize production. This study aimed to evaluate the genetic diversity of maize lines under optimal and phosphorus-deficient conditions.

Materials and methods
Genetic diversity among 93 maize lines was evaluated based on morphological traits under optimal and phosphorus-deficient conditions in pot culture. Pots were arranged outdoors in a completely randomized design (CRD) with three replications at the Faculty of Agriculture, Urmia University (45.5°E, 37.37°N, 1320 m above sea level). The pots were filled with soil collected from the Urmia University research farm, which contained low phosphorus levels (7.2 mg kg⁻¹). A total of 558 pots, each containing 15 kg of soil, were prepared and divided into two groups of 279 pots each. In both groups, pots were filled with a mixture of low-phosphorus soil and sand in a 2:1 ratio. All pots were fertilized with nitrogen at 6.0 g kg⁻¹ (applied in three splits during the growing season), potassium sulfate at 9.0 g kg⁻¹, iron sulfate at 1.0 g kg⁻¹, manganese sulfate at 0.15 g kg⁻¹, zinc sulfate at 0.66 g kg⁻¹, copper sulfate at 0.20 g kg⁻¹, and boric acid at 0.014 g kg⁻¹. In the optimal-phosphorus group, triple superphosphate was applied at 4.0 g kg⁻¹, whereas no phosphorus fertilizer was added in the control group. After pollination, various morphological traits were measured. Statistical analyses, including analysis of variance (ANOVA), descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, stepwise regression, path analysis, cluster analysis, and factor analysis, were performed using R software.

Results and discussion
Phosphorus deficiency caused a significant reduction in the mean values of morphological traits compared with optimal conditions. Stepwise regression and path analysis indicated that under optimal conditions, weight of ear without husk (WEWH), ear wood weight (EW), ear diameter (ED), cob diameter (CD), ear length (EL), and ear-up leaves (EUL) were the most important traits affecting grain yield. Under phosphorus-deficient conditions, WEWH, EL, ED, 100-grain weight (HGW), and biological yield (BY) were the key contributors to grain yield. Cluster analysis grouped the maize lines into three clusters under optimal conditions and two clusters under phosphorus-deficient conditions. Under both optimal and phosphorus-deficient stress conditions, the first cluster comprised high-yielding lines that can be utilized in developing maize hybrids tolerant to phosphorus deficiency. Factor analysis revealed that grain yield (GY), weight of ear together with husk (WETH), WEWH, and tassel height (TH), which exhibited high communalities in both environments, are key traits for selecting lines tolerant to phosphorus deficiency.

Conclusion
Significant differences were observed among the evaluated maize lines under optimal and phosphorus-deficient conditions. Nevertheless, lines 5, 7, 10, 24, 28, 48, 64, 114, and 121 exhibited suitable grain performance across both environments and can be utilized in breeding programs to develop phosphorus-efficient genotypes.

Introduction
Water stress is a critical factor limiting agricultural productivity worldwide, adversely affecting seed germination and plant growth. Water-deficit stress poses significant challenges to achieving optimal crop production by reducing germination rates, root development, nutrient uptake, and chlorophyll synthesis. Seed priming has emerged as a promising strategy to enhance crop tolerance to abiotic stresses. This technique not only improves seed germination and seedling growth under stressful conditions but also accelerates plant development, reduces the growth cycle duration, and increases overall crop yield. Stevia (Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni), a medicinal plant and natural sweetener from the Asteraceae family, is native to Paraguay, South America, and is now cultivated in many countries worldwide. Its high sweetening capacity and non-caloric properties have made stevia a plant of considerable economic significance globally. This study aimed to evaluate the most effective seed priming methods to enhance the germination and early growth of stevia under drought stress, thereby supporting its cultivation in arid and semi-arid regions.

Materials and methods
The study was conducted as a factorial experiment in a completely randomized design with three replications during 2023–2024 at the Seed Research Laboratory, Faculty of Agriculture, Ferdowsi University of Mashhad. The experimental factors included two Stevia rebaudiana ecotypes (Chinese and Indian), seven seed priming treatments [non-primed (control), hydropriming, strigolactone (SLs), forchlorfenuron (CPPU), selenium (Se), combination of CPPU + SLs, and combination of SLs + Se], and four water stress levels (0, −0.25, −0.5, and −1 MPa). Osmotic stress levels were simulated using polyethylene glycol 6000 (PEG 6000). Germination was monitored daily from the second day of the experiment. The number of germinated seeds was recorded daily, and germination traits, including germination percentage (assessed on day 11, with radicle emergence as the germination criterion), germination rate, mean germination time, mean daily germination, daily germination rate (inverse of mean daily germination), seedling length, and seedling vigor index (based on length), were measured. Data analysis was carried out using SAS 9.1 software, and mean comparisons were performed using the LSD test at a 5% probability level.

Results and discussion
The results of this experiment indicated that in the Indian ecotype, the germination percentage in the combined treatment of SLs and Se reached 70%, showing a 15% increase compared to the control treatment. Additionally, the germination rate in this treatment reached 9.13 seeds per day, which was double the lowest rate observed in the control treatment. Similarly, the highest mean daily germination and seedling vigor index were recorded in seeds primed with the combination of SLs and Se, reaching 3.18 seeds per day and 164.4, respectively. Seedling length achieved its highest average in the combined treatment of SLs and CPPU, indicating a significant improvement compared to the control treatment.

Conclusion
Overall, under non-stress conditions, the combined treatment of SLs + Se in the Indian ecotype and the SLs treatment in the Chinese ecotype effectively enhanced seed germination traits. The Indian ecotype demonstrated greater tolerance to water stress compared to the Chinese ecotype and responded more favorably to priming treatments. The combination of SLs and Se was identified as the most effective priming treatment, significantly improving the germination and early growth of stevia plants.

Acknowledgements
The authors gratefully acknowledge all staff of the laboratories at the Faculty of Agriculture, Ferdowsi University of Mashhad, and Damghan University for their support in carrying out this project.

Introduction
Wheat is the third most widely cultivated cereal crop in the world after maize and rice. It is considered a major source of nutrition for the ever-increasing global population as a staple food (Faisal et al., 2023), with an annual global production of 776.7 million tons in 2020/2021. Many strategies have been developed to produce plants capable of withstanding various stresses. Among these approaches, seed priming has been developed as an effective method for enhancing drought tolerance in plants. Selecting an appropriate priming method based on environmental and soil limitations is essential for stress mitigation. Seed priming stimulates physiological processes by soaking seeds in natural or synthetic solutions. This technique is classified into conventional methods (such as hydropriming, osmopriming, and priming with plant growth regulators) and advanced methods such as nano-priming. Based on the above considerations, drought stress represents one of the most significant challenges facing agricultural production, particularly in rainfed cropping systems. Therefore, alongside the development of drought-resistant cultivars, effective agronomic approaches such as seed priming are increasingly required to mitigate drought stress. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of seed priming on physiological traits and grain yield of wheat under rainfed conditions.

Materials and methods
This study aimed to evaluate the effects of seed priming on yield and yield components of wheat cultivars under rainfed conditions during the 2020–2021 growing season. The experiment was conducted as a factorial arrangement in a randomized complete block design with three replications at the Qamloo Research Station, Agricultural and Natural Resources Research Center of Kurdistan. Various seed priming treatments, including hydropriming, potassium dihydrogen phosphate, zinc sulfate, potassium nitrate, as well as an unprimed control, were applied to four rainfed wheat cultivars (Azar2, Rasad, Ohadi, and Homa). The priming solutions consisted of 20 mM zinc sulfate, 50 mM potassium dihydrogen phosphate, and 1.5% potassium nitrate prepared with distilled water. Then, each solution was added at a volume five times greater than the seed weight. The seeds were treated in aerated containers using an air pump at 20°C for 12 hours. After the specified duration, the seeds were rinsed three to five times with distilled water and then dried on labeled paper at 20 °C for 48 h. The dried seeds were then packaged and transported to the Qamloo station for planting. Data analysis was performed using SAS 9.1 software. Mean comparisons were performed using Duncan’s multiple range test at the 5% probability level.
Results and discussion
The results indicated that seed priming had positive effects on grain yield, germination vigor, and seedling establishment. In this study, potassium nitrate was the most effective priming treatment, resulting in a 45% increase in grain yield compared with the control. This increase in grain yield was attributed to positive effects on several traits, including thousand-grain weight, biological yield, plant height, number of seminal roots, and number of grains per spike. The wheat cultivars exhibited differential responses to priming treatments, with Azar2 producing the highest grain yield (1,293.9 kg ha⁻¹). Additionally, mean comparisons for root length indicated the superiority of Azar2 over the other cultivars. According to the results, potassium nitrate priming of the Azar2 cultivar resulted in a 36% increase in average grain yield compared with unprimed cultivars. Overall, the superiority of seed priming can be attributed to faster germination and improved seedling establishment of wheat seedlings under rainfed conditions.

Conclusion
Based on the results of this study, seed priming, in addition to improving seed vigor and seedling establishment, can enhance wheat grain yield and its components under rainfed conditions in cold regions similar to the study area. In this study, potassium nitrate and potassium dihydrogen phosphate priming treatments had positive effects on most measured traits and contributed to increased wheat grain yield. Seed priming with potassium nitrate accelerated seedling emergence, leading to uniform seedling growth and improved grain yield. This advantage becomes particularly important under rainfed conditions, where seedling emergence depends directly on environmental factors such as effective rainfall; otherwise, seedling loss and yield reduction may occur.
Acknowledgements
The authors sincerely thank the laboratory staff of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Mahabad, for their invaluable support and assistance throughout this research.

Introduction
Red kidney bean is one of the most important plant-based protein sources and plays a vital role in human nutrition. However, the global water crisis, particularly in Iran, where large areas are characterized by arid and semi-arid climates, poses a serious threat to the sustainable production of this crop. Moreover, excessive use of chemical fertilizers increases production costs and causes environmental degradation. Therefore, identifying sustainable strategies to improve crop productivity is essential. Humic acid, as a natural organic compound, has been reported to enhance plant growth and increase tolerance to abiotic stresses such as drought. It improves root development, enhances water and nutrient uptake, stimulates beneficial soil microbial activity, increases crop yield, and therefore plays a crucial role in sustainable agriculture. Accordingly, this study aimed to assess the potential of foliar-applied humic acid as a sustainable approach to mitigating water scarcity and reducing reliance on chemical fertilizers by evaluating its effects on yield and morphological traits of red kidney bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L., cv. Yaghout) under water-deficit conditions.

Materials and methods
The experiment was conducted as a randomized complete block design with three replications in Boyer-Ahmad County, Iran, during the year 2023. In this experiment, the main factor was the irrigation regime, which consisted of three levels: full irrigation, moderate water stress, and severe water stress (100%, 80%, and 60% of the plant’s water requirement, respectively). Foliar application of humic acid was assigned as the sub-factor at four levels: 0 (control), 2.5, 5, and 7.5 L ha⁻¹. The study assessed the combined effects of irrigation stress and foliar application of humic acid on the grain yield of red kidney beans, yield components (such as number of pods per plant, number of seeds per pod, and hundred-seed weight), growth indices (such as plant height and dry weight), and other traits.

Results and discussion
The results showed that irrigation regimes and humic acid application significantly affected both vegetative and reproductive growth of red kidney bean. Severe water stress (60% of water requirement) reduced the number of nodes on the main stem, leaf area index, plant height, and main stem diameter by 26.09%, 11.35%, 18.36%, and 20.33%, respectively, compared with full irrigation. In addition, foliar application of humic acid at 7.5 L ha⁻¹ significantly improved reproductive growth. This treatment increased the number of lateral branches, number of seeds per pod, 100-seed weight, and biological yield by 19.65%, 25.08%, 10.26%, and 20.78%, respectively. These improvements can be attributed to enhanced soil physicochemical properties, improved water and nutrient uptake, stimulation of enzymatic activity, and increased photosynthetic capacity and dry matter production. The observed reduction in growth under water stress was attributed to the limited water and nutrient uptake under these conditions.

Conclusion
Foliar application of humic acid at 7.5 L ha⁻¹ significantly enhanced the tolerance of red kidney bean plants to water stress. This improvement was achieved through enhanced root development and improved water and nutrient absorption. Moreover, humic acid application increased grain yield under both water stress and full irrigation conditions. This indicates an overall positive effect of humic acid on plant growth and development. Moreover, the application of humic acid can enhance water use efficiency in irrigated red kidney beans. As a result, similar or even higher yields may be achieved with reduced water consumption. Therefore, the application of humic acid as a sustainable management strategy improves the yield and quality of red kidney beans under water stress in Boyer-Ahmad County, assisting farmers in overcoming water scarcity challenges.

Acknowledgements
The authors gratefully acknowledge the Vice Chancellor for Research and Technology at Yasuj University for supporting the implementation of this project.

Introduction
The analysis of means and variances across generations is a crucial tool in genetic and breeding studies. It enables plant breeders to precisely evaluate genetic responses under diverse environmental conditions, including normal, saline, and drought stresses. Generation mean analysis allows the estimation of additive and dominance effects, as well as their interactions. This information is crucial for selecting optimal parents to achieve higher heterosis, thereby improving breeding efficiency. The objective of this study was to estimate genetic parameters controlling key agronomic traits using generation mean and variance analyses in populations derived from crosses between Morvarid and Sistan cultivars under normal and saline stress conditions during the reproductive stage.

Materials and methods
To investigate the genetic control of key agronomic traits in bread wheat, parents and their derived generations from the Morvarid × Sistan cross were evaluated. The experiment was conducted as a split-plot arrangement based on a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications at the Gorgan Agricultural Research Station. Two irrigation regimes, including full irrigation and saline stress, were evaluated during the 2022–2023 growing season. Saline stress was imposed at full spike emergence (Zadoks code 73) and early milk development (Zadoks code 60). Measurements of each trait were taken from 10 plants in the parental and F₁ generations, 30 plants in the F₂ generation, and 15 plants in each backcross generation. After maturity, plant height, spike length, peduncle length, number of spikes per plant, number of spikelets per spike, number of grains per spike, thousand-kernel weight, and grain yield per plant were recorded. Statistical analyses were performed using appropriate methods and statistical software.

Results and discussion
Analysis of variance revealed that the effects of stress and the stress × generation interaction were significant for thousand-kernel weight and grain yield per plant. Therefore, genetic analyses for these traits were performed separately under normal and saline stress conditions. For the remaining traits, due to non-significant effects of stress and the stress × generation interaction, data from both conditions were pooled and analyzed jointly. Accordingly, the results are applicable to both environmental conditions. Significant differences among generations were observed for most of the studied traits. The chi-square test indicated that peduncle length, plant height, and yield were not significantly affected under saline stress conditions. In contrast, the chi-square test was significant for other traits, indicating that the simple additive-dominance model is insufficient and suggesting that epistatic effects, genetic linkage, and maternal effects may influence these traits. Generation mean analysis indicated that non-additive genetic effects were more influential than additive effects in controlling most studied traits, including number of grains per spike, number of spikelets per spike, number of spikes per plant, thousand-kernel weight, and grain yield per plant, under both normal and saline stress conditions. Additionally, most traits were strongly influenced by epistatic effects and showed low narrow-sense heritability. Analysis of generation variances revealed that traits such as number of grains per spike, number of spikelets per spike, number of spikes per plant, and grain yield per plant were primarily influenced by overdominance. In contrast, for plant height and peduncle length, additive genetic effects were more significant than non-additive effects and no epistatic effects were detected. Furthermore, relatively high narrow-sense heritability was observed for plant height and peduncle length.

Conclusion
Based on our results under both conditions, genetic improvement can be achieved in plant height and peduncle length in the initial generations, but for other traits, including grain yield and its components, selection should be postponed to more advanced generations.

Introduction
Heavy metals (HMs) pose a serious threat to corn (Zea mays L.), a key crop for global food security. Melatonin (MT) enhances tolerance to abiotic stresses by regulating antioxidant enzyme activities and reducing oxidative damage. Similarly, sodium nitroprusside (SNP) has been reported to alleviate heavy metal toxicity and enhance stress tolerance in various crops by modulating nitric oxide signaling pathways. Therefore, this study aimed to: (i) evaluate the effects of lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) accumulation on corn growth and biomass production, (ii) investigate the physiological responses of corn to heavy metal stress, including changes in dry matter partitioning among plant organs, and (iii) examine the interactive effects of heavy metals with MT and SNP on stress tolerance mechanisms and the phytoremediation potential of corn.

Materials and methods
This pot experiment was conducted in 2024 at the research farm of Payame Noor University, Gandoman, Borujan County, Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari Province, Iran, under controlled conditions in a rain-protected shelter. The corn cultivar used in this experiment was Single Cross 704. The experiment was arranged as a factorial experiment based on a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with four replications. Treatments consisted of four levels of heavy metals as the first factor: (i) control (no heavy metals), (ii) lead (Pb), (iii) cadmium (Cd), and (iv) combined Pb + Cd; and seven levels of melatonin and sodium nitroprusside as the second factor: (i) control, (ii) 0.05 mM melatonin (MT), (iii) 0.1 mM MT, (iv) 0.5 mM sodium nitroprusside (SNP), (v) 1.5 mM SNP, (vi) 0.05 mM MT + 0.5 mM SNP, and (vii) 0.1 mM MT + 1.5 mM SNP. Data were analyzed using SAS software (version 9.2), and figures were prepared using Microsoft Excel (2013). Mean comparisons were carried out using Duncan’s multiple range test at a 95% confidence level.

Results and discussion
Exposure to Pb and Cd significantly increased peroxidase (POD) activity by 24% and 12%, respectively, and enhanced superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity compared to the control. The combined Cd + Pb treatment increased peroxidase (POD) activity by 32% compared with the control. The combined Cd + Pb treatment also increased malondialdehyde (MDA) and hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) contents by 42% and 46%, respectively, compared with the control. The combined Cd + Pb treatment reduced microbial biomass carbon (MBC) and microbial biomass nitrogen (MBN) by 8% and 33%, respectively. According to quantitative data, total plant dry weight decreased by 24% under combined Cd + Pb stress compared with the control. In contrast, MT-treated plants under combined Cd + Pb stress showed a 26% increase in total dry weight compared with the control. Similarly, SNP application resulted in a 20% increase in total dry weight.
Conclusion
This study demonstrated that exogenous application of melatonin and sodium nitroprusside effectively mitigates the detrimental effects of heavy metal stress on corn growth. The results demonstrated that both treatments enhanced corn resistance to heavy metal stress. Specifically, the findings highlighted the positive effects of MT and SNP in improving corn tolerance to combined Cd and Pb stress. The results confirmed that MT and SNP treatments significantly reduced oxidative stress markers such as H₂O₂ and MDA while enhancing aboveground biomass and photosynthetic pigment content. These findings suggest that MT and SNP have the potential to improve crop resilience and productivity in heavy metal–contaminated soils. Future research should aim to elucidate the molecular pathways involved in MT- and SNP-mediated stress tolerance, validate these findings under field conditions, and develop practical application strategies for large-scale agricultural use.

Introduction
The contamination of water, soil, and air by heavy metals has emerged as a major environmental concern driven by increasing anthropogenic activities. Major sources of heavy metals include urban and industrial wastewater and sludge, excessive chemical inputs, and metal mining activities. Cadmium (Cd) is recognized as one of the most hazardous heavy metals for both plants and humans. The permissible concentration of cadmium in agricultural soils is approximately 1 mg kg⁻¹. Cadmium has a low affinity for binding to soil stabilizing phases, such as oxides and solid organic matter; consequently, it can be readily absorbed by plants and translocated to aerial tissues. Cadmium stress inhibits several physiological and biochemical processes, including chlorophyll biosynthesis, photosynthesis, and nutrient uptake, ultimately leading to reduced plant growth and yield (Li et al., 2023). Cadmium accumulation and tolerance vary significantly among plant species and genotypes. Previous studies have reported a wide range of cadmium uptake and accumulation among different cultivars within the same plant species. Many members of the Solanaceae family, commonly grown in agricultural systems characterized by high inputs of organic and mineral fertilizers, exhibit high cadmium accumulation. Although Solanaceae species are regarded as cadmium-tolerant, their responses to cadmium stress vary among species. Physalis (Physalis spp.) is a member of the Solanaceae family valued for its bioactive compounds and its adaptability to a wide range of growing conditions. Physalis fruit possesses numerous nutritional, medicinal, and industrial benefits. The fruit is a rich source of provitamin A, vitamin C, and contains, to some extent, B‑complex vitamins, as well as essential minerals such as phosphorus, potassium, zinc, and iron. Consequently, physalis fruit has attracted considerable attention owing to its high nutritional value, antioxidant capacity, and reported anti‑inflammatory and anti‑stress properties, along with other medicinal benefits. The strong antioxidant properties of this plant are largely attributed to its high content of dihydroxy withanolides. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of different cadmium concentrations on the germination characteristics of physalis and to determine the relative tolerance and sensitivity of yellow, green, and purple cultivars to cadmium stress.

Materials and methods
The experiment was conducted in 2024 as a factorial arrangement based on a completely randomized design with four replications at the University of Torbat‑e Heydarieh. The experimental factors included six cadmium concentrations (0, 60, 120, 240, 500, and 750 μM) and three physalis cultivars (purple, yellow, and green).

Results and discussion
The results showed that the application of low cadmium concentrations significantly increased germination percentage and germination rate, possibly due to stimulation of seed germination. However, higher cadmium concentrations had a negative effect on all germination characteristics of the studied cultivars. Cadmium stress at 500 μM resulted in reductions of 76%, 83%, and 66% in seedling weight compared to non stressed conditions for the purple, yellow, and green cultivars, respectively. In all physalis cultivars, proline content increased with increasing cadmium stress intensity. For instance, at a cadmium concentration of 500 μM, proline content increased by 9%, 17%, and 23% compared to control conditions in the purple, green, and yellow cultivars, respectively. The highest contents of chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, and carotenoids were observed in all three cultivars at a cadmium concentration of 60 μM; however, the contents of these photosynthetic pigments decreased significantly with increasing cadmium concentration. The sensitivity to cadmium stress in the purple, green, and yellow cultivars was approximately 16%, 66%, and 71%, respectively. The tolerance index indicated that the purple cultivar exhibited the highest tolerance to cadmium stress (0.049), whereas the yellow cultivar showed the lowest tolerance (0.017).

Conclusion
Overall, the results indicated that all physalis cultivars tolerated cadmium stress up to 500 μM; however, seedling growth was inhibited at concentrations above this level. In terms of tolerance, the purple cultivar was the most tolerant, followed by the green cultivar, while the yellow cultivar exhibited the highest sensitivity to cadmium stress.

Introduction
Water stress is a primary limiting factor for plant growth and crop productivity. Given the scarcity of water resources in Iran and the need to enhance water use efficiency (WUE), various deficit irrigation strategies have become essential for sustainable agricultural water management. Regulated deficit irrigation (RDI) and partial root-zone drying (PRD) are two important management approaches under water-limited conditions. Conservation tillage is a fundamental practice in conservation agriculture that can effectively mitigate the adverse impacts of water stress on plant growth and yield. In agroecosystems, conservation tillage enhances crop productivity and promotes sustainability while conserving water resources and improving environmental quality. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the responses of maize yield, yield components, and biochemical traits to different tillage systems and irrigation regimes in Ilam.

Materials and methods
The field experiment was conducted as a split-plot arrangement within a randomized complete block design with three replications at the research farm of the Faculty of Agriculture, Ilam University, during the 2022–2023 growing season. The main plots consisted of three tillage levels (no-tillage, minimum tillage, and conventional tillage), while the subplots included five irrigation regimes ( irrigation at 100, 75, and 50% of soil field capacity, and variable PRD at 75 and 50% of soil field capacity).

Results and discussion
Significant interaction effects of the studied factors were observed on grain yield, biological yield, total phenols, and ear height. Increasing the irrigation level from 50% to 100% field capacity significantly improved the number of rows per ear, 100-grain weight, and both grain and biological yields. The highest grain and biological yields were obtained under irrigation at 100% of soil field capacity combined with conventional tillage (11,479 and 24,623 kg ha⁻¹, respectively), likely due to improved soil structure, enhanced root development, and reduced competition for water uptake. Also, the highest 100-grain weight (30.24 g) was recorded under full irrigation conditions. The maximum number of rows per ear (15.62), harvest index (46.62%), and chlorophyll content (a, b, and total: 13.1, 9.25, and 22.36 mg g⁻¹ FW, respectively) were recorded under 100% irrigation. Chlorophyll a, b, and total contents were higher under 50% PRD irrigation compared to 50% deficit irrigation. The highest carotenoid content was recorded under 50% deficit irrigation (3.56 mg g⁻¹ FW) and under conventional tillage (3.34 mg g⁻¹ FW). Water deficit decreased chlorophyll content and increased carotenoids, indicating a physiological response of the plant to water stress. Total phenol content also increased under drought stress, indicating plant adaptation to adverse environmental conditions. The highest total phenol content (6.88 mg gallic acid g⁻¹ FW) was observed under conventional tillage combined with 75% PRD irrigation. Furthermore, cob height reached its maximum under no-tillage conditions at both 75% and 100% irrigation levels (105.8 and 105.67 cm, respectively), with no significant difference between these two treatments. The no-tillage system outperformed other tillage treatments under deficit irrigation by enhancing soil moisture retention, thereby promoting higher dry matter accumulation.

Conclusion
The findings indicate that irrigation levels and tillage systems significantly affect maize agronomic and biochemical traits. Under deficit irrigation conditions, the best performance was achieved with PRD. Integrating PRD with a no-tillage system can enhance water use efficiency and promote dry matter accumulation. Furthermore, preserving natural soil structure and crop residues improves soil moisture retention, thereby mitigating the adverse impacts of drought stress.

Introduction
Drought stress is a major constraint on crop production, inducing oxidative stress and significantly impairing plant growth and yield. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are among the most important drivers of soil ecosystem dynamics. AMF have the potential to improve plant growth and development by modulating key hormonal pathways, thereby reducing the adverse effects of abiotic stresses such as drought. Under drought stress conditions, nutrient availability in the soil undergoes significant changes. Therefore, effective management of plant nutrition under stress conditions is essential for successful crop production. One of these strategies is the use of AMF. AMF are beneficial microorganisms that support plant nutritional requirements, promote plant growth, and contribute to overall plant health. Considering previous reports, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of AMF inoculation and salicylic acid application on enhancing drought stress tolerance in spinach plants.

Materials and methods
To investigate the effects of AMF inoculation and salicylic acid application on antioxidant traits and proline content in spinach plants under drought stress conditions, a factorial experiment was conducted using a completely randomized design (CRD) with three replications. Experimental treatments consisted of three factors, each at two levels: AMF inoculation (non‑inoculated and inoculated with AMF), salicylic acid application (without and with salicylic acid), and drought stress (100% field capacity as non‑stress and 50% field capacity as drought stress).

Results and discussion
Based on the results, morphological traits of spinach, including plant height, leaf number, and leaf area index, were significantly influenced by the experimental treatments. In particular, AMF inoculation and salicylic acid application enhanced these traits by 36%, 41%, and 66%, respectively, compared with drought stress conditions. Analysis of variance revealed that AMF inoculation, drought stress, and their interaction significantly affected proline content, soluble protein content, malondialdehyde concentration, antioxidant enzyme activities (catalase, superoxide dismutase, and ascorbate peroxidase), and root colonization percentage. Antioxidant enzyme activity was affected by drought stress, such that increasing drought stress led to enhanced enzyme activity, contributing to the reduction of reactive oxygen species. The highest activities of catalase, superoxide dismutase, and ascorbate peroxidase were recorded under drought stress conditions in combination with AMF inoculation and salicylic acid application. In this study, the highest percentage of root colonization was observed under non-drought stress conditions with salicylic acid application, whereas the lowest colonization percentage occurred under drought stress conditions without salicylic acid application. The highest proline content was recorded under drought stress conditions in combination with AMF inoculation and salicylic acid application, representing a 23% increase compared with the control treatment. The results further indicated that AMF inoculation and salicylic acid application significantly affected the percentage of root colonization. The combined application of AMF and salicylic acid under drought stress conditions resulted in a 34% increase in protein content compared with non inoculated plants without salicylic acid application.

Conclusion
The results of this study demonstrated that AMF inoculation and salicylic acid application had significant effects on most of the measured traits, including antioxidant enzyme activities, proline content, soluble protein content, and malondialdehyde concentration. These findings suggest that AMF inoculation and salicylic acid application are effective strategies for improving plant tolerance to drought stress.
Acknowledgements
The authors gratefully acknowledge all individuals whose valuable contributions supported this research.

Introduction
Oilseed crops play a vital role in human life by supplying a substantial portion of nutritional requirements and serving as raw materials for various industries. Camelina (Camelina sativa L.) is an oilseed crop with high cultivation potential compared with other oilseed species, owing to its relatively short growth period, moderate to low nutrient requirements, and high tolerance to a wide range of biotic and abiotic stresses. Developing drought-resistant crops such as camelina, along with strategies to conserve water and enhance water use efficiency under drought stress conditions, can contribute to increasing total oilseed production. In this context, the application of soil amendment materials such as zeolite can improve plant growth under drought stress conditions. Zeolite is an environmentally friendly material that has been widely used to improve soil physical and chemical properties due to its unique characteristics. Accordingly, the present study aimed to investigate the effects of different zeolite application rates on seed yield, oil content, and fatty acid composition of camelina under optimal irrigation and drought stress conditions in Karaj, Iran.

Materials and methods
A factorial experiment was conducted during two growing seasons (2018–2019 and 2019–2020) with three replications to investigate the effects of zeolite application rates (0, 5, 10, and 15 t ha⁻¹) on camelina under three irrigation regimes (full irrigation, restricted irrigation from the silique formation stage, and restricted irrigation from the beginning of flowering). A 2‑m separation distance was maintained between experimental plots to minimize lateral water movement and prevent inter‑plot water penetration. Each experimental plot consisted of six rows, each 6 m long, with a row spacing of 30 cm and a plant spacing of 5 cm within rows. Camelina seeds (Soheil cultivar) were sown on 27 September in both growing seasons. Irrigation was applied using a surface (flood) irrigation system, and irrigation intervals across treatments were determined based on 80 mm of cumulative evaporation measured with a Class A evaporation pan. The volume of irrigation water applied to each main plot was measured using water meters installed separately for each main plot across all three replications. Accordingly, total irrigation volumes of 5120, 3840, and 2560 m³ ha⁻¹ were applied under full irrigation, restricted irrigation from the silique formation stage, and restricted irrigation from the beginning of flowering, respectively.

Results and discussion
The results indicated that drought stress significantly reduced relative water content (RWC), chlorophyll content (a, b, and total), oil content, and seed yield of camelina, whereas stomatal resistance and carbohydrate and proline contents in camelina leaves increased under conditions of irrigation withholding from the silique formation and flowering stages compared with full irrigation. Zeolite application under three irrigation regimes resulted in decreased stomatal resistance and carbohydrate and proline contents in camelina, whereas relative water content (RWC), chlorophyll content (a, b, and total), oil content, and seed yield increased in response to zeolite application under different irrigation regimes. The highest seed yield (2209 kg ha⁻¹) was obtained under full irrigation with zeolite application at a rate of 15 t ha⁻¹, whereas the highest camelina oil content (31%) was obtained under full irrigation with zeolite application at a rate of 10 t ha⁻¹.

Conclusion
Overall, the findings demonstrated that applying zeolite, particularly under irrigation withholding during the silique formation and flowering stages, reduced the adverse effects of drought stress, improved camelina plant growth, and ultimately increased total production. Therefore, the application of 10 t ha⁻¹ of zeolite under full irrigation conditions and 15 t ha⁻¹ under irrigation withholding from the silique formation and flowering stages is recommended for achieving the highest seed and oil yields.

Acknowledgements
The authors gratefully acknowledge the support provided by the Seed and Plant Improvement Institute (SPII), Karaj, Iran.
